the 408 swap is done!

I have been dying to make this post for a while. i was having all kinds of electrical issues last week.....i took a nice memeorial day weekend break, and got it done! the underhood is still a little nasty, i have a mech oil guage hooked up in the pics, and the battery is up front in the pics. i made this hard on myself by going carbed, and redoing all the electrical stuff. my pics look dusty, but you get the idea.

inline 250 amp fuse + holder on the wiper motor cover....plus the battery and gauge cluttering it up, better pics soon.

Somthing fun i did with an extra guage.

This is the height with stock engine mounts, a Vic Jr. intake, edelbrock 750 carb+cleaner. YES YOU NEED A COWL.

Ignore the dust in the air, not bad considering these were from a Tiburon. or maybe they're Recarros.......

Not sure if i like the shift light there, but i figured it would be cool rather then a clock. you can also see my choke handel.

Close up of my switch panel. the first switch is the master power, the big button is the starter, then the fuel pump, fan, ignition box.

I am tuning the carb, and getting the exhaust on next week. 3" all the way back! i will have a vid soon, and hopefully a dyno pull. LMK what ya'll think.

modo 05-27-2009 05:32 PM

hah, I was about to post the same. I had one of those edelbrock breathers on a z28. It never caught fire, but did burn holes in the sponge filter.

Looks good bolt-on :glenn:

Davetopay 05-28-2009 03:27 AM

It could just be the pic, but in the first one it looks like the engine leans to the passenger side. :disturbed

bolt-on-bandito 05-28-2009 04:45 AM

the motor is nice and level, that pic sucks. any suggestion for a similiar size air cleaner?

gtmustang88 05-28-2009 05:42 AM

I had the same air cleaner on my v8 s10 and it caught fire from a back fire also.

look at the air cleaner i have on mine, it sits down over the body of the carb, should work for you.

bolt-on-bandito 05-28-2009 10:43 AM

puff, i like your panel. where did you get the labels? we have a label maker at work, but nothing that looks that good.

what brand air cleaner is yours?

its not labels.. cnd'd baby :word:

and i forget the brand air cleaner, do a quick ebay search for low rise or something along those lines and you should find them

Chances50 05-28-2009 09:40 PM

What heads and cam did you end up going wotih?

X2 for pro-systems!!!

MRBiggs 05-28-2009 09:52 PM

Glad you got it running, but I gotta say you have done some bad things to that poor car over the years man. Well, maybe not BAD things, but things that just aren't my cup of tea. But hey, its your car and if there good with you, its fine by me.

But again, congrats on getting it running.

bolt-on-bandito 05-29-2009 05:56 AM

what'd ya mean?????

Screw you guys, i still think my fog lights looked cool.

wing, scoops, tips all gone!

yeah, i have done, and undone more stuff then most people will ever DO. In my defense this was my first car. i had a jeep and explorer. so i knew nothing about customizing cars......that and all my friends are ricers. :nono2: Yeah overall i know most people would never cut their dash to inset gauges, but i like the challenge of it all. plus this car should have had a salvaged title when i got it. it was a wreck. anyway at this point i am just going to try to keep it clean, and get this combo tuned in.

my heads are vic sr. world products, heavy yes, but they have been ported HUGE. The intake runners are ported out to almost 280cfm. These heads were on a 357W that ran 9.90's on previous owners car. The valves are good to .710 Lift.

i went with a hyd roller here are the numbers. http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/Ca....aspx?csid=899

Chances50 05-30-2009 12:27 PM

im very curious to see the power it makes. Good luck

Does it have a very radical idle?

bolt-on-bandito 05-31-2009 05:20 AM

hard to say at this point, because it is running off open headers. I am getting my exhaust this week. so far all i have been able to do is driveway tunning, no actual drive time yet. i think 450RWHP should be very reasonable. even with my horrible carb.... :p

Chances50 05-31-2009 01:07 PM

450 should be a cake walk for a 408, I made 399rwhp with a 331 with no tuning so you shouldnt have a problem, the only thing im worrid about is your heads not flowing enough. I had the roush 200's unported on my 331 to start with and it only made 306rwhp. I swaped HCI to get the Hp my car was at not just the heads.

bolt-on-bandito 05-31-2009 05:14 PM

these things have been ported HUGE, they flow 280 cfm, and the exhaust should be up to it. anyway i'll have the exhaust on later this week, i'll break it in, and wait for a dyno day!

Chances50 06-01-2009 08:35 PM

At what lift do they flow that?

95BadBird 06-02-2009 12:58 PM

good to see it getting done.

bolt-on-bandito 06-02-2009 07:53 PM

head details....i gotta dig out the paperwork. yeah, i get my exhaust this sat.

thanks for the odometer tip, it will be much easier to track the motor's mileage :D

youtube update

This is a quick video of my mustang. not the best quality, but it serves the point for those who were asking. from this vid you can see the exhaust and interior. underhood/running video coming soon. the underhood is kinda nasty due to the battery still being upfront, and bungeed down. i ran this in the trunk for the last couple of years, but i was having so many electrical issues i just ran everything the shortest possible distance. i will put it back in rear this fall.

I also have nasty mechanical guage wiring all over my engine cleaness. my expensive autometer's are giving me crap/not hooked up, instead i have some cheap sunpro mechanicals serving for the initial oil press/water temp duty. the carb needs some adjustment, the quick idle is all over the place. the wire you see running from the back to the front in the car was used to hot wire my fuel pump. so far the 408 has only driven to the exhaust shop and back. due to a military deployment i haven't had any time to play with this. once the 4th has past i will have some time agian.

I didn't try to add music, just happen to catch what i was playing in the garage.

Blck92GT 07-03-2009 07:16 PM

Video of it running would be much nicer :word:

bolt-on-bandito 07-03-2009 08:41 PM

yeah...... it runs, it just doesn't idle right, right now.

Cloud 07-04-2009 02:00 AM

Looks badass man :word: Other than the rear seat delete (which I wouldn't do) and the hood (is that custom?!) it looks awesome :glenn:

I've put in way more than what I bought my 94 GT for- my family is constantly telling me to buy a better car, but it's just small stuff that needs to be fixed. I hate having a car that is completely stock :nono2:

Quick question- how did you get the "MUSTANG" letters a different color? Did you just mask it off and paint it?

bolt-on-bandito 07-04-2009 03:57 AM

the mustang on the passenger side is a decal. i used to have the factory rubber air bag covers, and then i just traced over the raised mustang logo with a silver parts sharpie, pretty similiar effect. i made the passenger side air bag cover area. my car was very trashed when i got it in '04. blown air bags, cracked k member, hood flew up etc... i did most of the things to this car because they were messed up, not because i just wanted to. fortunately it still has a good title, but i can honestly say i paid 3K for the car and with this swap and all mods i have a total of about 7K into......not bad in my book.

i will be tuning the carb VERY soon. stay tuned. :D

BONESTOCK 07-04-2009 02:43 PM

I like that steering wheel. What kind is it? :word:
