Hippy and anyone else who knows Pittsburgh

wtf is there to do there? I'll be there for a week in October, but I was just asked to come up with a want-to-do list now.

That's Queen Googlyooglyness to you, and she hates private messages and wants to hear what ChrisB99 has to recommend.

But if he was willing to entertain meeting her, she would totally entertain emptying her PM box.

Talking in third person is awkward.

We'll have to do lunch one day... I work by the airport.

What are you interested in doing?

There's a decent nightlife in the southside.

lots of museums/science centers downtown.

october will start to be getting chilly - but the gateway clipper fleet (fake paddle boats) are somewhat interesting.

If you were more of a sports fan, I'd say visit heinz field (they have lots of touristy/steelers stuff inside but meh)

You have to eat at Primanti Bros.

let me know where you are going to be staying and what you are interested in doing

I'm actually staying somewhere along the river over in Ohio. I don't remember the town's name off the top of my head.

I know for suresies I will be spending a day going down to the Homer Laughlin Co, I'm super excited about that! But I wanted to spend a couple days in the city too. And where I'll be staying in town will be dependent on what I'm doing

The Carnagie Science Center might be nice if it's really worth the time. As far as nightlife goes, I won't be very rowdy (I'm going with my mom and her gf) but if there's like a really cool smaller music venue that you could recommend, I'd lovelovelove that!

I just want anything that'd be...neat. I don't mind dragging them to weird places, and they doesn't mind going I'm happiest traveling when I just bum around town, rather than going to some big, long tourist trap. Like, I just saw the toonseum and that sounds pretty cool, that may be my art bit since I'm not too keen on the warhol museum.

Oh, and "we should do something that's Italian/Polish/Slovak or something, ya know? Cabbage rolls, maybe."

thats either Stuebenville or East Liverpool areas

stuebenville is just west of me, e. liverpool to the north.

Carnegie Science center is pretty good for dorky folks

http://www.gatewayclipper.com/

those are fairly fun/touristy

go up to Mt. Washington - take the tram down
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monongahela_Incline

as far as non-rowdy nightlife - skip what I said about the South Side...
I have no life.... so I don't really know of any small music venues

there is shiit ton worth of colonial/revolutionary historical sites here, you could probably google those

if you find something interesting, ask me about it.

Eat Primanti Bros sandwich - otherwise, there are no must eat places that stand out from anywhere else.

Nat Geo rated it one of the top 25 places globally to visit in 2012, there is a lot to do if you're open to different things.

I live in Pittsburgh but will be in and out of town in October. The website I linked is a good resource. If I were you I'd check out the Warhol Museum, possibly the August Wilson Cultural Center. The strip district EARLY on a Saturday morning and by early I'm talking like 7 am or sooner. I'm not 100% sure on when things kick off around there but it's a big open market atmosphere. The Heinz History Center is also usually pretty cool and it's very close to the strip. Primanti Bros is also down there so you could go early, walk around and check out the random things, go to the history center to cool off and then grab something to eat at Primanti's.

The Riverwalk down by the football stadium is pretty cool and of course there is the Casino right there as well. I'd also look in to the Church Brew Works which is a micro brewery that was formerly a church. There is also a small brewery in the strip. Go up on Mt. Washington at night and possibly eat somewhere in Station Square before hand. You can park at quite a few places and take the incline up the "Mountain". You'll get a taste of the famous views Pittsburgh has to offer and there is a little ice cream place up there as well. Although I'm not sure when it closes. Phipps Conservatory is very cool and the Pittsburgh Aviary is worth checking out. The zoo is also worth a go and it's not far from the city. It would also be worth your while to walk around Oakland where The University of Pittsburgh is because the architecture is phenomenal and it's also where the Art Museum and the National History museum reside.

Soldiers and Sailors Memorial hall is also there and it's an amazing building architecture wise. They have a military museum in there but I'm not sure on the cost to get in, it's also where they filmed the scene from Silence of the Lambs where Hannibal is in the make shift jail cell. It's upstairs and they allow you to go up. The Science Center is down by the Casino and the River walk but if you ask me it can be hit or miss. I'd look in to what exhibits they may be displaying at the time. They have a omnimax in there which can be cool but it depends on what's showing.

There are some newer burger places that are pretty good popping up. The one is called Burgatory and it's at the Waterworks mall. It's a bit of a drive out of town but it's not terribly far. You could eat there and catch a movie. I'd also suggest checking out Forbes Avenue in squirrel hill or just the area period, some cool little shops and it's not far from town. The Pittsburgh Symphony is fantastic as well. Look over that website and just flag things you'd like to do. The inner portion of the city isn't overly active at night, at least not yet. Most of the action is in the South Side or the North shore. Lot's to do if you keep an open mind. Hit me up as Chris said if you have any questions. I may be in town during that time but i have no idea.

I'm on my phone so sorry if the sentence structure is dicked. I believe Chris lives a good bit away from the city, maybe an hour? I'm more like 20 minutes. If you can muster the expense checking out a Steeler game would be pretty awesome as well but you'd have to look in to buying tickets now.

The reality is Pittsburgh is a pretty amazing place if you take the time to explore it. Soooooo much to do that so little take the time to appreciate.

Aliquippa looks like a cute area to drive to, we may have to check it out -- what's the name of the place?

Google said Hopewell was like halfway to Harrisburg - is that right????

The strip is an awesome suggestion, thanks! And we may be wandering around the Univ because apparently my mom's family line has a room named after them or something. Forbes hill looks super cute, too.

The thing making me most weary of the Science Center is that I'm already blessed with being right next to one of the largest nature/science museums in the US. And I've been there twice this year so far (and will be back soon for the Space Junk IMAX!) I guess you answered it for me, since unless it was just fscking amazing I plan on skipping it.

Anything that's out of town Westward is totally fine and something I'd like to check out. As I kinda mentioned, I'll actually be in Toronto, Ohio for most of my trip -- a bit further West than where Chris lives, almost 2 hrs outside of Pittsburgh. I plan on spending like a Friday/Saturday in the city tho.

I would 100% skip the science center. If you have just the two days I'd be in the Strip or Oakland. Oakland as I said above is the University and A LOT of the museums and awesome buildings. I'd say it would also be cool to jump on one of the free tours but you need to schedule it in advance. Either way have fun. It's a great city.
