engine dies when warm

4.6 SOHC in 97 cougar. once the engine is at operating temp, it will die when you restart it, ie make a stop at a store, and come out a few minutes later to start it, it will start up and then die right away. however, once you start driving, it will then idle fine and wont die. ive had to start it and immediately put it in gear so that it will stay running. after this point, it will run fine and will not stall again unless you turn it off and then back on. IAC? any other suggestions?
