Oh man, didn't realize this about the zune ...

yeah, you can share with your friends via wifi. but you only get to play the song three times in three days, and then you're locked out and prompted to purchase it?

bro sent me this link ... Reasons not to buy a zune for Christmas:

I thought that was only for songs that you purchased. If you have shiit that you ripped from your collection, can't you share that with no restrictions?

sounds like you can't. according to that particular blog (which i haven't confirmed), even if you're the artist that created the music and want to share it with your friends, it will disable it after three plays/three days. maybe it knows what was wifi'd and what was transferred via pc.

another source:

"Also, let me add that music exchanged among Zunes will cease to play after three days or after it's been played three times. This includes music, podcasts, and other files that are specifically licensed for unlimited reproduction or trading, such as music distributed under a Creative Commons license that doesn't allow post-release encryption of the sort that Microsoft wraps around it for these transfers. The Zune software on the computer also doesn't offer any direct support for podcasts, including subscribing to them, although you can manually transfer them."

so if I make an mp3 of me farting and want to share it with friends, it will require them to 'purchase it' after 3 listenings? How will it know where to direct them to buy it? Will it just delete the song?

I think to be safe they have ALL zune to zune transfers only good for 3 plays.

that is.. un less someone transfers you the song(s)... then before you play it 3 times you take it home back to the PC and somehow crack it.

who knows if that can be done though.

only if the song is DRM-enabled, foo'

un-DRM'd music can be transmitted as much as desired.

yup. it just locks it up and makes it unplayable, and tells you to buy it. it doesn't direct you anywhere though because, of course, even though you have built-in wifi, you can't actually connect to the internet or your computer -- only to other zunes.

unless you have one and have proven otherwise, you're incorrect. every source on the internet says wifi'd music gets microsoft copy protection as it comes in. it ADDS the DRM on the fly.

I thought you could purchase music directly through the wifi interface on the zune. You can't do that?

no, you need to do it through their store/program.
