My Neighbors Pit bite my dog!! What would you guys do now!!

So my parents have a small Jack russell terrier and well sometimes he gets out and wonders of. Normally when that happends my little 12 yr old brother just calls his name and the dog comes running back. Well yesterday my little brother seen the dog out on the sidewalk so he called for him and as soon as he was running back the neighbors pit bull some how got out the fence and started chasing our dog. Well the pit bull cought the dog right in front of our house and the pit bull bit our dogs tail and was trying to reach for the next but our dog just kept moving around to avoid the pit from grabbing onto his neck. Well my little brother seeing what was going on started socking the pit bull in the head trying to make him let go of our dog. Next thing you know the neighbors kid who owns the dog started screaming at his dog and the dog went running back home. Our dog then went running into my parents room and hid under there bed. When My dad went to see what happend he noticed our dog had an open wound next to his azz and the dog was bleeding. So my dad took the dog to the dr and they said they needed to keep him over night and open him up tomorrow to check that the pit didn't cause any internal damage plus the dog also needs stiches. The vet now is going to charge my Dad $500 for that work.

I'm pissed off because this isn't the first time this dog has done something like that. Last time the dog got away and killed another neighbors seimese cat but that neighbor didn't report it . I told my dad to talk to the neighbors and have them pay for the vet bill or else he is going to call animal services on them but my dad really doesn't want to do anything because he feels that since that family (looks) poor that they wouldn't be able to afford to pay nor wants to put them in that situation right now with the holidays and all. I think that's bull crap but my dad has a really big heart and I can't hate him for that.

Another thing that pissed me off is that the owners kid seen what happend and i'm sure he told his mom but the mom doesn't even have the decense to come over and ask us if our dogs ok. :mad

To a point, I think it is also your parents fault for letting their dog out as well.

Why do all poor/trashy people feel the need to have pitbull?

I never understood that.

They are responsible for their dog, just like if it was their kid. Take them to small claims court if they wont pay the vet bill...

Uhm, I'd probably realize that problems like this come up when I can't keep my own pet on my own property.

Cant blame your dad on two fronts. He's being cool not getting pissy around the holidays especially if the other family is poor. Also you dont wanna be getting into a hate war with your own neighbors...You never know what kind of people they are and they live right next door.

Keep BS trouble outta your house dude.

I talk to neighbor about it calmly propose that they keep and eye on their dog. Then give them a menacing stare and walk back home.
