Thumbs up psp2 to have a sping '07 release date

Looks like Sony will be following Apple and what theyve done with the ipod series

Quote:
The latest edition of PSM (PlayStation Magazine) says that Sony is set to release a second generation PSP in Japan by March 2007.
PSM, which is a Future publication, cited unnamed sources, but nevertheless sounded confident that a retooled PSP is indeed forthcoming.

"It will not be the 'PSP 2," stated the PSM staff. "However, Sony is instead eyeing a page from Apple's iPod strategy and upgrading the existing PSP's specifications while keeping the retail price the same."

The mag even went into specifics as to what changes will be made. PSM pointed out that Sony recently made a deal with Samsung to purchase "a large amount of 8GB flash memory chips, which are to be built into the new PSP according to numerous semiconductor industry reports." PSM speculates that this increased built-in memory will facilitate Sony's PSP downloadable game and content strategy.

The current PSP features an expansion slot for memory sticks, and comes packed with a minute 32MB of memory.

In addition, PSM expects the new PSP to incorporate a built-in still/video camera with potential EyeToy-type gaming capabilities.

Aesthetically, it will reportedly be thinner and lighter than today's PSP, which will help reduce production costs. A slot-load UMD drive is also expected.

One feature the publication doesn't expect, however, is the addition of a second analog stick; something that many PSP gamers think the system could certainly benefit from.

Furthermore, PSM states that "From all indications, the next PSP will have the same graphic and sound capabilities of the current system," and will still fully support UMDs.

Still, there will surely be some consumers upset that a sleeker, significantly more capable PSP may be arriving so soon. The original launched in North America on March 24, 2005 for $250.

October's PSM is now available on news stands for more details.

So is it a brand new system, or just an upgraded version of the current PSP like the DS Lite?
