Vista: Explained

Quote:
Right now I see moving to Vista from XP being analagous to a new car purchase.
Your current car "Betsy" is only a couple years old, and has a lot of life left in it. It is mechanically sound, comfortable, and pretty easy on the eyes. When it first came out there were many major and minor mechanical glitches, but after many trips in for warranty service your ride is rock solid. This model does get stolen a lot, but if you remember to lock the doors and turn on your security system that is very unlikely. With a fresh wash/wax and detail job your car is hard to tell from the newest models without further inspection. You are very comfortable with this model now, all the controls are exactly where you expect them. Betsy is very reliable and predictable now that the warranty work was done, and gets you to work, shopping, school, etc. with a minimum of hassles.

As comfortable as you are in "Betsy", the new models are starting to catch your eye. The modern design makes your ride look pretty boring, and there are lots of new integrated features. So you take the newest model "Christine" for a spin. Jumping in the driver's seat, everything is very appealing to the eye, but none of the controls are where you expect them to be. You turn the key and are startled to hear a woman's voice , "Are you sure you want to start the car?" Well, of course you are, otherwise you wouldn't have got in! Punching the "yes" option on the dash, the car fires right up, greeting you with a beautiful heads up dash system and the engine purrs. You hear a small electric motor whir as a 14 part safety restraint encircles your body. This seems a bit excessive, but safety first, right? As you shift into gear the woman's voice questions you again, "Are you sure you want that gear?" Slightly annoyed, you push the "yes" button again and pull away from the curb.

The salesman rattled off a whole list of improvements before you left the showroom, but as you accelerate down the onramp it is hard to discern any acceleration difference from your old car. Cruising down the freeway, the car seems smooth and responsive, but so did Betsy. Curious about the mileage you are getting, you check the MPG indicator on the heads-up display, but the numbers are changing too rapidly to pin down a solid value. Is it better than what you are getting now? Who knows, the numbers aren't settling in yet. You signal for a lane change as you exit the freeway, and for the 47th time in this 15 minute trip you hear that woman's voice. Again. "YES I'M SURE!" you yell at the disembodied voice, and punch the "yes" button hard enough to crack the trim surrounding it. Man, won't that bitch shut up? My ex-wife didn't even nag that much, and I divorced her!

Pulling back into the car lot you are immediately engaged by this slippery salesman again. After your test ride you would like some hard data. How does the mileage compare to my car? What are the performance numbers? Will my personal electronics work in here like my old car? The salesman deftly dodges your questions like Ali dancing around Foreman's right hook. Any questions about defects or reliabilty are redirected to selling points on how good the warranty coverage is. Wow, this guy must have trained in politics! The only answer that you are now sure of is that it will cost you more money.

So now you come to a decision: Do I keep Betsy, who will serve you unfailingly for several more years? Or, have Christine's shiny clearcoat and new car smell been enough to overcome your unanswered questions about reliability, performance, and that nagging bitch in the dashboard. The eye candy will impress your friends and strangers alike, but are the new features enough to take a risk on unknown reliability and part you from your hard earned cash?

Maybe, if you wanna spend another $ 400+ and when nvidia gets their shiat together and theres at least 1 game to play it on. Then we'll see if theres anything to the hype.

I get 105FPS in CS:S vid test in Vista with a DX9 card and a crippled system (No SLi support, both cards still in place)and using beta drivers. I'd like to try 64bit out but again......no driver support.

I just picked up an Nvidia 8800 GTS card for $359.99 at Newegg. Supreme Commander (RTS) will be DX10 and comes out in ~2 weeks. Drivers for the card were just released too. So the stars are starting to align. A patch to Comany of Hereos will enable DX10 effects too. Since I never played that, that should be a winner.

Ok so another $ 359 and no games right now and beta drivers. ughh
Yes, they are starting to align but as of right now everything is lacking after all the hype by nvidia. I dont know how this turned around to me hating on nvidia but they dropped the ball on this imo. I should have full support for the products that I own right now, and not the end of Feb before a actual non-beta driver is supposed to be released.

It's a brave new really expensive world.

My point is that it's not worth the $ at this point. Later? I'll wait and see.

For me, it was time to upgrade anyway. I didnt 'have to', but my equipment was just over 3 years old and I write my equipment off for business anyway . So I replaced a 3.2 GHz with a dual core 2.4. Went from 1GB RAM to 2 GB, 120 GB hard drive to 2x250 HD. My old graphics card was great in the day, but is showing age for sure now... ATI 9800 XT, now I have the Nvidia 8800 GTS.

I will say, hardware prices (other than graphics cards) seem to be a lot cheaper. I got my new system for just under $1300. Every new rig I get (roughly 3 years on average) gets cheaper and cheaper.

LCD prices seem mega cheap to me now too. My first 17" LCD was about $650 and it looked ok, but had some mild ghosting of images.

What can I say, I'm a sucker for new tech. heh.

Mine has been upgraded so many times I have no clue how old it is. But the video card is a geforce 4 ti-4600, probably like 4+ years old now. Won't even run Aero.

And doing any sort of video or encoding kills it, the Athlon 3000 is running out of ooomph.

Ditto, Thats precisely why I'm on Vista now. It just pisses me off that nvidia after all their hype still doesnt have a decent non-beta driver.
