Post KNIVES: Got my SOG Flash II the other day... PICS...

From http://glennmoller.com

muhahaha

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The SOG flash II is one of the best "over the counter" knives on the market (for the price). Not quite a Wall Mart special, but you can find it at large chain sports retailers like sports chalet, etc.

Flash II Black TiNi 3.5" blade .125" thick, 4.5" closed, 8" open, 3oz, Steel AUS-8. Made in USA. List Price $84. Street $59 - $70.

You might have heard I lost my SOG Pentagon Elite, I decided to replace it with the SOG Flash II. I love SOG knives, I really do. I'm into the durable light weight Zytel handles, discrete carry clip and near effortless one handed SAT spring assisted opening.

For those not into knives, you probably know what a "switchblade" is. You press a button and a spring loaded blade shoots out (or drops out). Well those are illegal to carry around in most states :-) However what many knife companies have created are "assisted opening" knives which are completely legal and you can even buy at Walmart (like Kershaw, Gerber quick draw, etc).

SOG's version of this is called SOG Assisted Technology (S.A.T.). How this works is you begin open the blade by hand, then the spring takes over and flips the blade out and locks it in place.

For all intended purposes this knife operates in a very similar manner to an automatic knife. I own a few different auto assisted knives and find the SOG to work the easiest / smoothest.

You may notice the safety switch (little switch) on the knife. When it's red, the knife can open. The other switch is the lock mechanism. After the blade springs open, you pull the switch back to release the blade lock to fold it again. The lock can be in any position and will automatically slide fwd when the blade swings out. So you only have to worry about the safety switch location. Personally I always have the safety off (ready to rock).

Another feature I love about most SOG knives is the location of the spring clip. The clip extends past the end of the knife. Allowing the knife to be completely in your pocket. It looks like you have a pen clip from the outside, no one freaks out.

You can get the Flash II in Black TiNi, Part Serrated Edge, smooth edge and tanto. I like the Black blades, specially for carry. They scratch up with use, but its SOOOO much less threatening to idiots that scare easily when you whip this thing out to cut off tags or in the office, etc.

Another cool feature of most SOG knives is the inclusion of at least AUS-8 steel (which is 1.5 times harder than 440 stainless steel) Kershaw blur and many other auto assisted knives in this category use 440 stainless. AUS-8 is roughly similar to 440B in terms of hardness. Google "knife steel" for an explanation on different types of steel and ceramic blades, the ups and downs of each. But make no mistake, the reason you pay $60 - $200 on a modern tactical blade is because of the steel.

This is not your $5 swap meet tactical alloy lock back.. haha

Size Comparisons:

From Top to bottom: Kershaw Blur, Leatherman Charge Ti, SOG Flash II, Gerber Paraframe I.

I'll review some of these and a shiit ton of others in the future...

Why didn't you get the blur with the s30v blade?

As much as I wanted to, I could not get myself to like SOG's.

You've got the cash, stop buying BM's and SOGS. Move up to CRK's and Microtechs.

SOG's are every bit, if not more expensive than CRKT.

I have the Kershaw in that picture and it's a great knife.

And it's so sharp that I cut my finger all the way to the bone. :

I already own a few Columbia River Knife's

I gotta grab some pics..

but as far as I can tell... they are 420 stainless.... they didn't cost me as much as the SOG's though.

here is one:

and I also got a lightfoot model.

but as far as a CRKT with AUS-8 or 440B steel or above... I didn't really look hard enough for one...

Here is a good buy for a CRKT:
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/39723-11896-1276.html

that one has an AUS-8 blade (like all the SOG's).. but I think I went with SOG for the assisted opening vs manual.

Which model CKRT's are 440B (or AUS-8) and above (for a decent price) ?

I see a ton of CKRT's with 440A and AUS4 steel blades... all priced very well though.

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/columbia_bchg.htm

otherwise I do love my CRKT drop point it only cost me $30

I went with the standard black blur in 440 stainless because it was a Walmart Special and only $59 (over the counter).

and I don't think the Tanto blade blur is available in S30V is it ?

edit:
my next blade purchase:

~$70

SOG Trident... with SAT assist (like the flash II).

I'm really getting into the SOG's now.. heh.

but I'm gonna review the CRKT's, Boker and benchmade stuff later on also

it's all good shiat

No, s30v Blur is not available in Tanto, because tanto blades are dumb.

oh... got link to one ? edit: saw link.. heh

On a side note speaking of S30V and Ti handles:
I know the new leatherman TTi's now have S30V blades (for just the main blade) vs the 154CM on the Ti.

I was going to buy one and put my old leatherman shiit back in the packaging and return it

but I have not seen them in stores yet... but I see them online.

not sure if it's worth another $120 for me to upgrade to the S30V.. but thinking about it.

edit:

Those are bad ass... I'm gona buy one

I'm looking at the Chris Reeve Large Sebenza model.

I was hoping for something more like $299 or somethin if I was going to order online

Otherwise I gotta head out to south coast plaza cutlery (here local) and see if they carry them there... I got some of my swords there... and they carry only the high end stuff.

I just got the Gerber paraframe II and the Gerber paraframe mini..

They are ok for the price ($25 for both in a set).. But now i really see why my Kershaws have always cost me so much more money, they are way more solid.. I have a few but my current that i carry every day is the boron coated "Chive".. It's an awesome little knife and makes the paraframe mini feel like a total POS.. But then again, that's why retail price of the black chive is like $80 and the para mini is like $15-20 haha.

I am trying to find something that is a nice quality w/ spring assist and a lock that has a blade length of about 2.75in.. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Im looking for the same thing too, heh. I don't like carrying a huge 4" closed 8" open knife.
