63 Year Old Woman Set to Serve In Iraq

Bishop, who is a nurse, is going to war at age 63.

"There are some others in their 50s. They go, 'We're old, but you're very old,'" Bishop told KMBC's Bev Chapman.

Chapman reported that Bishop has spent 18 years in the Army Reserves, most of it caring for wounded soldiers.

Bishop is in the 325th Combat Support Hospital. She was in her 40s when she met some recruiters.

"I got to talking to them. The next thing you know, there I am raising my hand," Bishop said.

Bishop served at a hospital in Germany in 2006, bringing home an emotional slideshow.

"I've never been able to go all the way through it. It doesn't take much," Bishop said.

While she knows Iraq will be different. Bishop said she is not thinking about the danger, just her patients.

"It means a whole lot to me to be able to go take care of those guys. That was the most rewarding experience I ever had, bar none," Bishop said.

Bishop is a proud mother and grandmother, Chapman reported.

"This is Destiny. Destiny is 5," Bishop said about her granddaughter.

She knows leaving her family will be hard. But Bishop said she has made up her mind. She is going to war to help.

"I feel very honored I get to go and do this again," Bishop said.

Bishop will leave along with about 400 others in her unit on June 20. She told Chapman that she won't be home for her 64th birthday, which is on the Fourth of July, and she said she will miss the fireworks.
