Thumbs down Pitbulls...again :nono2:

Pit bulls attack woman

Two dogs maul and kill poodle in Tustin and later captured; woman hospitalized with bites and cuts.

The Orange County Register

TUSTIN - Faint bloodstains in Nan Haacker's front yard, bandaged hands and a slight tremor in her voice were the only remnants of an attack by two pit bulls Wednesday that pierced the calm of her neighborhood and left her poodle dead.

Police and animal control officials were able to capture the dogs that attacked Haacker on Vinewood Avenue near Yorba Street after a daylong hunt, but the loss of her beloved pet showed on her worried face.

"They took him to the center of my lawn and tore him apart," Haacker said.

An early morning walk with Wolfgang was a daily routine, when Haacker would take her friendly canine out for a stroll, often running into neighbors walking their own pets.

Just before 6:30 a.m., Haacker stepped onto her porch, noticing a large pit bull at the foot of her driveway. Turning to close the door to her house, she didn't hear the dog approach.

Turning back around, Haacker realized the pit bull had moved to the edge of the driveway and was staring menacingly at her. She tried to push Wolfgang behind her screen door but was rushed by the dog, as well as a second pit bull that she says "came out of nowhere."

Haacker dropped to her knees, hoping to shield Wolfgang from the attacking dogs, which frantically bit her hands and arms.

Her cries failed to catch the attention of her neighbors, who she said were still asleep.

"I kept screaming and screaming," she said.

Despite Haacker's struggles, the pit bulls pulled Wolfgang out of her grasp, dragging him away.

By the time she got to her feet, the dogs were gone, leaving Haacker bleeding from wounds on her hands and elbow. She walked to a neighbor's home, where she was able to call for assistance.

County firefighters rendered first aid before taking Haacker to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where she was treated and quickly released.

Meanwhile, police set up a perimeter around the neighborhood, capturing one of the dogs and shooting the other with a Taser before it ran away.

A group of 10 officers began escorting students at nearby Columbus Tustin Middle School onto the campus and set a perimeter around the area.

Officials found the second dog at 14200 block of Holt Avenue, after a tip from a resident. An officer shot the dog with a non-lethal round after it attempted to run toward a condominium complex.

Orange County Animal Care Services is holding both captured dogs in quarantine until their owners are found.

The pit bulls wore collars but not tags, said Tustin police Lt. John Strain, and the captured dogs were not implanted with microchips. Both dogs appeared well-fed, he said, leading investigators to believe that they are owned by someone in the area.

"We have not had any location on an owner yet," said Ryan Drabek, a spokesman for Animal Care Services.

The dogs will be quarantined for 10 days, Drabek said, during which time officials will investigate whether they should be declared dangerous or vicious.

If no owner steps forward, the dogs will likely be euthanized, Drabek said.

Haacker said she was surprised the attack occurred in a neighborhood where the biggest problems are usually "rabbits and a coyote."

"My hope is that no one else has to go through what I went through," she said.

The latest dog attack comes as another pet owner, Sherri Moody of Westminster, is appealing a March decision by the city to have her dog, Brutus, euthanized. Brutus, a pit-bull mix, bit Moody's friend earlier this year.

Moody and her lawyers are expected in court today to argue that the dog does not deserve a death sentence.

Recent pit bull incidents

December 2006: A pit bull panics and attacks its owner as he attempts to rescue the dog from a house fire in Dana Point. Deputies nearly shoot the dog before the owner gets it under control.

June 2006:Shaun McCafferty, 27, of Anaheim is attacked and killed by a pack of pit bulls at a ramshackle compound in the San Bernardino County desert near Phelan. Eight dogs are impounded after the death.

August 2005:A mail carrier on his route in Santa Ana is mauled by a pit bull and Rottweiler, and requires medical care. The dogs are seized by animal control officers.

June 2005:A pit bull attacks Richard Meehan of Laguna Niguel and his dog in a park near Niguel Road. Meehan loses half of his left pinky finger and suffers bites and cuts to his arm. Emergency surgery saves Meehan's dog.

March 2005: Vladislav Koudymov, 46, of Yorba Linda is cornered by three escaped pit bulls, resulting in seven bites on his hands, legs and arms. Police are forced to kill one of the dogs when it charges a woman.

Dogs just don't attacked people period. I hate when they give the story and don't give any background. The dogs may have been abused their whole life or chained up.. Another bad pit bull owner obviously

This kind of thing probably happens weekly with other breeds, it's just the Pitbulls that make the news.

same with rottweilers, but they never mention all the small dogs that bite people. Their are probably more attacks from small dogs then pit's or rott's, but because they are so small they don't get reported.

because when a chihuahua attacks you, you arent admitted to the ER with life threatening emergencies

yeah because a pack of shih-tzus would have a really tough time taking me down whereas 1 or 2 pitts and i'm fighting for my life.

same as a 7' 300 lb. man can kick my ass a whole hell of a lot easier than a 4' 96 pound midget with one arm.

jesus you're retarded.

edit: that and there's HUNDREDS of dog breeds, and you want to compare all the statistics to just two.
