Hot tub people- how often do you test/mess around with the water?

Never owned one, plan on draining/filling the thing today, but after that how often do you bother to test the water or tweak with chemicals?

indoor hot tub?

I only fill it up when it's used, drain it when I'm done

so 'jacuzzi' is probably the correct term.

typical 6 person size, dunno your standard 'square with jets and lounge seats and ****' jacuzzi/hot tub/spa.

I only test the water after it's been used and the stuff you put in after you use it has had a change to dissolve and mix in. Test for proper pH and chlorine level, and it it's good, no need to touch it until it's used again.

There's some kind of ozone generator in mine that works during the in between times to keep things right.

Keeping food and drink, and even clothes out of the hot tub helps the water go longer between changes. I change mine some where between every 6 months and a year, depending on how much usage the hot tub has seen, or how it looks and tests.

It's less work than the pool.

You could check the water every week if you wanted, but chances are you probably would only need to add a tiny bit of chemicals like once a month or so depending on how often you use it.

after i fill it, i get the ph to the right level, then i use ph Buffer so it stays there. after that i just shock it after its been used and keep a little floating duckie with stabilized chlorine tablets in there. it reeks to high heaven of chlorine, but that comforting for most people who know enough about hottubs to know what goes on in them

Im a manager of a pool store that also deals in spa's and chemicals for them.

Generally you drain the Hot tube once ever 4-6 months depending on the amount of use it sees. Test your water at least once a week. Usually chemicals do not need to be added unless your water is really off (PH and Alkalinity). However there are many different choices for sanatizing your water. The nature2 system is a mineral based system which acts as a sanatizer. There is Bromine and Chlorine as well as Baquaspa to keep your hot tub clean and clear. General recomendation is to toss in a non chlorine shock after every use (ie Fresh and clear) and then once a week toss in a chlorine shock (ie Chlorbrite). When you drain the hot tub, prior to draining it, toss in some spa purge and let that sit overnight, this will clean out the organic buildup that you cant reach in the pipes. Next day drain the hot tub clean it, seal it, etc. Upon filling, a little metal free with some spa perfect and your water should be perfect.

I'm sure you can find alot of information online about this as well. If you were in NJ i could save you an assload on chemicals.

Drained the water over the weekend, threw a bottle of Metal Gon, a pack of Sodium Bromide, and 3 'brominator' tablets into a floater. Tested neutral and nice to know I'm not sitting in the same water the previous owner's 3 year old pissed/$hit in.

I suck at keeping up on my bromine, and don't have an ozonater, so I usually wind up swapping the water out once a month, but ours also gets pretty heavy use, usually involving alcohol and "stuff". Bought a $40 pump from Harbor Freight, drain it out into the garage floor drain, and can have it re-filled and heating back up in the span of a few hours.

link to the pump? (or general description).

Took forever to drain out of 100' of garden hose running horizontal for about 85'

We've had an outdoor hot tub (spa) for about 9 years. At first, it was a constant battle keeping the water at proper levels. We had to check it pretty much every second day, and still fvcked up a lot of water.

Now we virtually ignor the thing, check it every couple weeks or once a month. You learn as you go and get better at it all the time.
The secrets? WHen using PH up or PH down, use just a little bit. Not a cap full, maybe a 1/4 cap or 1/8 cap and wait a day to see what it does.
We don't use shock anymore, it really throws things wacky.
When your chlorine/bromine is too low and you can't get it up, turn up your temperature. When the chlorine/bromine is too high, turn down the temperature to burn it off.

To drain the tub I bought an electric one inch pump. Takes about 15 minutes to pump it out.

I change the water after each gangbang. That works out to be about once a month in the summer months and every weekend in the winter months.
