Anyone ever dropped a HUGE tree?

Ive got a tree thats a biggun... gotta come down. Its dead and im choppin that bish up for the winter. Up until now ive never had to fell a tree, ive had enough dead stuff on the ground to work on. now i think its getting kind of dangerous also. its probably 50 ft if not 60 ft tall. oak i do believe. good thing is its far away from anything i care about it falling into, and its leaning a little and not in the direction of anything at all... how do ya do it?

my dad chain sawed a few really big ones when my parents moved into their current home (it's on a larger plot of land with lots of trees and sh!t)

it was pretty far back so he just cut and let it drop

Notch it the way you want it to fall, and then cut from the back side until it tips. Make sure your audience is twice as far as you think the tree is tall. If it is already partially leaning and you can fall it there, thats your best bet just be careful because if its rotten and already leaning it might go as soon as you notch it. FULL goggles, heavy gloves, hardhat, steel toe boots, full length sleeves and pants. Also a good idea to have atleast one person there, but again waaaaay far away.

I have a couple of trees that are too close to the house for comfort, especially now that is it Hurricane season.

Used to harvest tree's for a mill.

If its really that big leave a back strap, and never cut through your notch untill its already down.

If in no danger of falling on any type of structure:
Tie a 100ft+ length of rope to the upper part of the tree. Have a friend walk the rope out in the direction you want the tree to fall. Notch the base of the trunk in that direction. Then cut from back, when it starts to crack/fall have your friend pull the rope so it definetly falls that direction.

I just had an 80 tall sweetgum tree cut down in the backyard recently, it was huge!! It was about 15 feet from the house, they got it down without a problem. Watching them cut it down was pretty cool, it's like an art form.

If there's no danger of landing on something, knock it down.

Otherwise, take it down in pieces.

Playing with "ropes" and silly things like that is a recipe for disaster or will do nothing. To lean down a big tree requires a heavy tractor and steel cable.
