Xbox 360 65nm chips out there, 45nm chips in the future
HAHA what they don't know is Chartered is having a HELLACIOUS time getting anything for yields on their 45nm line.. Seriously alot of their steps are F'ed up big time.. CMP has been struggling for a few years now and they don't have near the upgrades they need to their equipment. I hear Implant and etch are no better.
ANYWAY ----------------------------------------- According to reports, contract chipmaker Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing has begun work on a 45-nanometer CPU designed specifically for a video game console, and the word on the street is that Microsoft is the company placing the order. The Singapore-based chip company, which produces the current Xbox 360 CPU, is set to begin work on the new design in late 2008 or early 2009. The smaller chip would mean lowered production costs, smaller power requirements, and a cooler operating temperature -- which would address a handful of problems the current Xbox design has. The newer 65nm chip which the company produces for Microsoft went into production over the last two quarters, and Chia Song Hwee, Chartered's president and CEO, said that "you would expect 45nm to come on stream about 18 months from that timeframe." So, expect to pass some time before any major changes beyond the 65nm come... perhaps Halo 3 will make the wait more bearable?

Same chip maker as the current malfunctioning xboxs. I understand that they are improving it, but Im definitly gonna wait to see how it functions for awhile first. |

well that is a moot point since the problem is in the chip design not the fab process. Chartered only facilitates the mass production of the devices they hold no hand in the design of the device itself. If the issue was caused by some mfg defect like bridging or SOI breakdown or similar there could be concern but that is not the case at all. ![]()

I've heard reports that the 80gb PS3's will be using the 65nm chip and then the 45 chips possibly as soon as mid 2008.
granted I haven't heard anything about the 45nm chips in a few months so... ![]() either way Microsoft needs to get that newer chip in there ASAP. ![]()

one big problem that the 360's are having is the lack of thermal compound. with what i had on my chipsets was just ridiculous. the paste was barely between the heatsink and the chipsets. it just seems like microsoft is rushing and shortcutting every possible way they can. i really dont want to say its the chipsets fault all together because my unit has yet to mess up ever since i fixed it.

COMPLETELY different ball game and this chip is being produced by IBM at this time.. the 323 facility while have extreamly lax and stupid gowning requirments is actually getting good yield and doing good R&D design.. However I think that contract is up the end of this year at which time it will probably be transfered over the founry work at TSMC... Quote:
Also nto quite the truth.. MS desgns the stuff but the chip is produced at Chartered in Singapore and the assembly is done at Flextronics. If anyone is at fault for something like heatsink compound it would be flextronics not MS.

Why don't they just stick a goddamn fan on the processor heatsink and call it a day??

well we know its not noise issue ![]() I assume its a space issue and you still need to vent it out.. ![]()

actually you can still put a fan ontop of the heat sink that just pulls the heat off. just find a 12 volt source on the board, solder a 3 pin connector and put the female end on the fan and there you go. i worked on one and i actually kept the system cooler than the others.

The stock fan on my AMD (that i'm looking at as i type this) is 1 inch thick, don't tell me they don't have 1 inch to play with inside that case. And for venting, I'm sure the body already has vent holes/slots cut into it, that would be enough. I don't know, they seem to be making very illogical decisions to me. ![]() |
