THIS IS WHY WERE DOING THIS : Carroll Hospital Center's Level II Special Care Nursery (SCN) currently has the space to provide health services for five newborns requiring specialized care immediately after birth. The SCN is designed to provide highly specialized care for premature babies who weigh between 1,500 and 2,500 grams and who are between 32 and 36 weeks in gestational age. It is equipped to perform CT scans, echocardiograms, EKGs, EEGs and ultrasound. Babies are admitted to the SCN for a variety of reasons, from minor to life-threatening illnesses, including respiratory distress, infections, birth defects, circulatory problems, and a need for nutritional and temperature support. Premature babies are increasingly common. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the rate of premature births increased more than 29 percent between 1982 and 2002. One in eight babies in the United States is now born prematurely. Doctors are not completely sure why the rate of premature births is rising. Thanks to medical advances, premature infants are surviving at earlier and earlier gestational ages. In fact, an estimated 90% of babies weighing 800 grams (slightly less than 2 pounds) or more survive today. However, because a premature baby’s organs are often not fully developed, they are at risk for health complications, such as breathing problems, infection, anemia, and low blood pressure and need to be taken care of in the SCN. Being able to provide these services close to home allows families to spend more time with their babies, which improves the babies' care and outcomes. In 2005, the utilization of Carroll Hospital Center’s Level II Special Care Nursery grew by more than 100%. In addition, women and/or their infants have needed to be transferred to Baltimore area hospitals due to space limitations at Carroll Hospital Center. When this has been necessary, this has meant a 100 mile round trip commute for families visiting the newest members of their family. In planning for the future of our littlest patients, Carroll Hospital Center has committed to renovating and expanding the Special Care Nursery area in the Family BirthPlace. This expansion will not only require additional space but critical equipment such as additional cardio respiratory monitors and infant care centers. The Level II Special Care Nursery is being expanded from five stations to ten. |

Running for cover: Weather hurts attendance, but doesn’t keep all enthusiasts away from car show By Kathryn Leiter, Times Staff Writer Monday, August 20, 2007 Dylan Slagle/Staff Photo Auto enthusiasts check out classic Fords on display during Mid-Atlantic Mustang Club All-Ford Car Show hosted by the Carroll Hospital Auxiliary and the Mid-Atlantic Mustang Club at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster Sunday. While some run for cover in their cars during a rainstorm, others run to cover their cars. At the Mid-Atlantic Mustang Club All-Ford Car Show Sunday, Best in Show winner Robert Hahn Sr. was prepared for the rainy day event with a car cover and a tent to make sure the winner didn’t get soaked. Many of the cars showed at the event are strictly for show, not having been driven around town. Hahn owns a ’93 SAAC Shelby, one of only 30 ever made. Hahn bought the car in Feb. of ’92 with nearly 20 miles on it. Close to 15 years later, Hahn’s Shelby has been driven 77 miles. The white car with blue stripes is kept in either Hahn’s garage or in a trailer used to transport it for shows, he said. Hahn drove the car around town once, but then it started to rain, so that was the last joy ride in the Shelby, he said. Club president Michael Anderson is a self-proclaimed Ford guy, but couldn’t have a car strictly for show. “I am all about the go,” he said. Sponsoring the event was Crouse Ford and the Mid-Atlantic Mustang Club along with the help of the club’s sponsor Scooters Crabs and Seafood in Elkridge. The event was held in the Carroll Hospital Center’s parking lots, with proceeds going to the Special Care Nursery at the hospital. Nearly 150 people came out to the event, which would have been tripled had the weather been nicer, Anderson said. Not many Mustang clubs give back to the community, said Eric Newman, member of the Mid-Atlantic Mustang Club. The hospital and club joined together when club member Brian Wolff and his wife, who is a nurse at the Carroll Hospital Center, had a baby there last month. Donations and the money collected from the $12 entry fees will go toward the expansion of the Level II Special Care Nursery, which provides care for infants born as early as 32 weeks. The event featured live music, a beer garden, food supplied by area restaurants and close to 100 Fords. “Maryland is defiantly a Ford state,” Anderson said.
