Eye, caramba!
SHE'S A GAMER | Sky forward Melvin recovering at home, vision intact, after opponent popped out her eyeball

August 16, 2007
BY TINA AKOURIS takouris@suntimes.com

The story line: With the Sky (13-19) officially eliminated from the playoffs, the second-year team is hoping to end the season on a high note by winning its last two games. Jia Perkins sparked a 77-65 victory over New York on Tuesday with 24 points off the bench, boosting her chances for the WNBA's Sixth Woman Award. Houston (12-20) is coming off an 81-73 victory over Eastern Conference leader Detroit on Tuesday.

Melvin was going up for a rebound Tuesday night, with the Sky leading the New York Liberty 10-8 in the first quarter, when Liberty forward Shameka Christon accidentally slapped at Melvin's face and stuck one of her fingers in Melvin's eye.

Melvin was down for several minutes before being taken to nearby UIC Medical Center. She was treated and released and came back to the Pavilion for the end of the game, which the Sky won 77-65.

Melvin, wearing sunglasses, met her teammates in the locker room and participated in Fan Appreciation Night after the game.

''That was one of my firsts,'' Sky coach Bo Overton said of Melvin's injury. ''I was scared.''

Melvin said doctors didn't give her an official diagnosis, but she did feel her eyeball pop out. It went back into the socket at the hospital by itself. She also suffered several scratches to her cornea.

''It was a miracle that my eye went back in,'' she said. ''That injury requires a surgery, and they said right now everything is just traumatic stress. As long as my vision was fine, they didn't see anything serious.''

While her teammates were flying to Houston on Wednesday for their game tonight against the Comets, Melvin stayed home and fielded calls from family and friends, sleeping every two hours.

She has a doctor's appointment today and will find out if she can travel to New York for the season finale Sunday.

''I had a lot better vision [Wednesday],'' Melvin said. ''I have drops to use every two hours, and it seems to get a lot better. But I woke up really scared this morning.

''I've been very emotional all day and reliving it. I compare it to your first car accident, and you keep reliving it over and over.''

Melvin injured the same eye in 2003 when she played for the Cleveland Rockers. Comets forward Tina Thompson elbowed her in the eye during a game, fracturing a bone.

With no broken bones or damage to her vision, Melvin is thankful.

''Everyone was saying I was so calm,'' Melvin said. ''I felt like angels were around me.''

Probably a repost, but oh well

She's screaming because she can see her reflection in the floor.
