Thinking about picking up a mountain bike..

nothing special, as I don't plan to go use it in any mountains. I live about 3 blocks from the bike path down here by the beach, figure it'd be a good idea for a cardio alternative. Getting a little bored on the treadmill at the gym.

I'd considered it a year ago, but then got busy and never got around to it.

So what's a decent bike - that will only see paved roads and is on the cheap side. i.e. if I park it at venice beach to get something to eat and come out and it's gone - I won't really care vs. some $1000 trek. Is a mountain bike even the right choice for what I want to do?

When I was at sport chalet I looked at them for like 3 minutes, the first thing the guy said was "you do know they require you to wear a helmet now.." to which I replied "I'll pay the fine." I somehow managed to ride a bike throughout my entire childhood without one and lived.. no way I'd put one of those stupid lookin things on now .

I have a Diamondback Hardtail and I love it. Mine is probably more than you need, disk brakes and all, but I have tested the bikes strength. If all you are going to be doing is flat trails, a hardtail is what you want or even a Comfort. Comfort bikes have the same general shape as a Mtn bike, with front shocks, but they have smaller tires for less rolling resistance. They are designed for flat trails and hard dirt. And you wouldnt need a helmet. I wear one because it saved my life once already while I doing like 30 down a hill and ate sh1t hard.

This is my bike, but grey

First step, go to a real bike shop - not some faigle sport chalet.

Next, and this is gold to save some money, find last year's model. It will be very insignificant changes but You'll save at least 100-150 on some entry level decent bike with top qualtiy parts. I bought my bike for 280 and the same current year model retailed for 420. Same parts, just slightly older frame, nothing major).

As for mt. vs street bike - think about what you are gonna ride the most and go in a try out the bikes: the difference is like night and day, but each is good for its own thing.

cruisin around on the street at 10 mph is one thing. 30 down a hill with a dropoff on one side is something else. And the trails I was on were fire trails, ruts up yin yang out there. I put clips on my bike to hold me from how bumpy the ride gets at those speeds. BTW, sliding down a hill while clipped into a bike = not fun.

I cant ride anymore without clipless shoes. I LOVE being connected to my bike. My bike and i are one.

You gotta learn to release faster.

Yeah, I need the clips too, so much more secure. And I had tightened my clips down all the way before that ride, and my falls was like instantaneous. My tire hit a soft spot on the trail and turned perpendicular to my direction of travel. I remember seeing the tire turn, then feeling my head slam on the ground. The bike actually came over the top of my while I was still attached, and the rocks embedded in the top of the helmet show that I did indeed slide down a mountain on my head.

Makes a huge difference in your usable power output.. insted of downward power strokes you can scape and pull up too consistant power thoughout the revolution helps alot when climbing..

though everyone that has just switched over to clipless peds has fallen in the parking lot..

That sounds like the ticket - normal looking and good on pavement (as that is all the bike will see).

That and the suggestion of getting last years model.

Thanks for the tips guys.
