Any Software Testers on MW?
Just want to get an idea of what the job entails. Is it boring?

my gf did qc for software. all the training was on the job and she got some sort of generic certification for software testing to bump her pay. she describes the experience as "fvckin boring". it's not hard if you can pay attention to detail, though it is very repetitious. if you don't mind going hours on end without human contact and don't get bored easy, then it's the job for you

When i worked in a large company as a developer we had a team of QA software testers. You have to be very detail oriented and interface with developers very closely. It can be very fun if you're interested in software and like to learn every facet of how it works and really dig in and do the tedious work of testing all possibilities and finding flaws and then communicating your findings in a constructive way.
As far as being boring, it could be night and day depending on the company/project and people involved. For the most part, you'll be challenged intellectually and you'll have to prove yourself. you'll deal with people with big egos that have no time for stupidity or stupid people, but will respect people who are smart and provide valuable input towards something they work hard to create. Despite teh nerd stereotype, development is very competitive in its own way. If you want the job, you have to come off as someone facinated by the whole process of software development and when you see something complex like a piece of software, you want to take it apart and learn its inner workings for the intellectual challenge.

Eh might have to think about it some more. Thanks for the input guys. Reason I ask is someone I know wanted to know if I'd be interested in an upcoming job for software testing. He said I only had to know a bit of Sun Solaris. In this market I just might have to settle.

I've been doing SQA for about 12 years. If you're the kind of person that enjoy breaking things, it's a great job, and it's never boring. Requires a lot of script writing, test case development, documentation reviews and a lot of other administrative tasks. I work in the storage field so I've learned a lot about SAN, NAS, RAID and a million combinations of OS/backup apps. Very rewarding job but the schedules/hours can be grueling. Pay scale is about the same as development, but I think the job is more interesting.

don't do it if you can avoid it or ask for a lot of money.
