Does anyone here speak German?
Looks like I'm going to be moving to Germany for a stretch of several months. I know that English is a Germanic language, but does anyone have any practical experience with how hard it is to learn? I've got a few weeks...how much German do you think I can learn in a short period of time?

I'm fluent in it (have been since ~18). I don't know how to describe the learning process but it wasn't that difficult for me really. The sentence structure is the hardest part.

You'll have a much greater learning curve actually being IN the country though. I went from having an extensive knowledge of the language (as much as you can get in a classroom) before going and living there and becoming fluent in it. |

Get Pimsleur or Rosetta Stone to get the basics before you go.
You will learn more once you are forced to communicate with the locals.

Get Rosetta. You'll be fine if you can get the "iccccchhhh" type annunciation down. As said, the sentence structure will fvck w you, but at least people will get what you're trying to say.
I've spoken it since I was born, my mom is German.

Big difference between learning a language because you had to take it during school, and learning one because you need it to communicate. Focus on the basic, top 100 common and spoken words, and just be patient as people laugh at your incorrect pronunciation.

I didn't find it that difficult. Like you said, English being a Germanic language makes the learner curve a little simpler.
That being said, I don't know German Took it back in high school and caught onto the majority fairly quickly.

Spent a bunch of time in Dresden for month at a time. That was even east germany so they mostly speak German and Russian. You will be fine with english. Almost all of the younger people especially speak great English. I took German in HS but didn't care so didn't retain much but it was enough to read signs and menus. The grammer is what will screw you, the dative and accusitave case and the fact you can make something past tense multiple ways if it's formal or informal. The vocabulary is on the easier side.
Recommend spending all your free time taking train to Prague. Great city and the woman are the hottest in the world hands down and I have seen a great share of the world. (on average of course) |

I spend 3-4 months places all the time. Never bother to learn the language, would be nice if I had the time but Korean, Chinese etc not the easiest to pick up. I don't consider it moving or living though. I have been in Singapore the last 2 months and I am kinda ready to go home soon, I have a bunch of stuff to get done before the summer starts. |

You can get the basics down in a few weeks easy. Try talking to the locals whenever possible, getting drunk with them is even better for learning.
Dont forget to eat your "american" while your there...just walk to any baker shop.German was my first language, so I cant really say how hard it was to learn.

I speak German, but I studied it for over four years between high school and college. I recommend Rosetta Stone. It is similar to English. In fact, I understand English grammar much better after learning German. There are a few rules that make it very easy, like the verb always goes second in a sentence, when you have ei or ie in a word, the last letter always controls the sound, etc. that make English look like calculus.
Goofy analogy but I'm high on pain killers.

I am fluent in German, grew up speaking German. I am currently working in Switzerland with a lot of Americans, Canadians, and British guys. Some have lived here for a year or even longer and still can't speak German, they all say that's it's very difficult especially if everyone around you switches to English immediately as soon as they notice you don't speak German.

German is easy to learn, just get some language software and you'll have the basics in just a few months. If your going to the major cities, most people speak English. That will help fill in the gaps. Western Germany is heavy with American culture. The east...not so much. More people speak Russian as a second language than english. I have spent a lot of time in Saxony, mostly in the middle of no-where. Even then, most people had some understanding of english.
Edit: here is a good software that is cheap

In Germany, they teach english in their schools. Anyone there under 30 can speak enough english that could get whatever you needed done.
