vibration
engine or drivetrain....
slight vibrations while driving slow through town.. 4th gear at like 4krpms+ = satan. If i shut the car off, the vibration is still there while coasting. If i take it in and out of 4th gear, it feels really bad ![]() Normally i'd say no problem and just rip apart the transmission.... however 4th gear is direct drive i believe (t5 manual)..... now obviously you cant diagnose a problem over the internet, but based off that info... should i take a look inside the trans or go for the engine? I did have that one piston that was lighter from the rest when i did the rebuild, but it just feels more driveline than engine ![]() also, if you just sit there and rev the engine to 4k or so, it doesnt vibrate... so again, that doesnt lead me to believe and engine problem.... what could i be overlooking? Replace engine and come out w/ a vibration that only happens when the vehicle is in gear, most notably 4th gear.... Last edited by Nate; 07-13-2009 at 12:31 PM. |

![]() this however, is different. Its a slight flutter while tooling around town, not that noticable... but 4th gear is the spawn of satan around 65+... shift into 5th and its straight butter. if you shut the engine off while its vibrating horribly bad, its still there. You can feel it in the clutch a little bit, but if you try shifting in and out of 4th gear while coasting w/ the engine off... you think you are going to die. Its evil. im absolutely boggled. |

That's weird. With drive shaft/u-joints/rear end the faster you go the worse it gets. Engine, you can make it vibrate in neutral by reving it up. Looks like all you're left with is transmission. Although at this moment I can't get my head around what would be causing it. I'll be thinking about it. ![]() what happens at 75?

![]() if you do a search on the corral for vibration you'll see ![]() basically its smooth, then around 75mph or so, it starts rattling you out of the car, and it makes a weird hmm... hmmm....hmm.....hmm.....hmm.... sound. sucks. cant race it or take it on the highway thats plagued me for years though, so i just dont do either of those. but the 4th gear thing.... im baffled, simply because it happened right after the engine swap.... i dont know.

Have you ever had your driveshaft balanced? That'll get rid of the 75mph gremlins for sure and it might uncover something else along the way.
What about mounts? Engine mounts in good shape? Trans mount fairly new? Any chance you got the engine way off to one side on it's mounts when you dropped it back in? Pretty easy to check, just look at the bottom side of each frame bracket where the engine mount stud comes through and check that they are both in approx. the same position in the holes.

![]() engines mounts are good, trans mount was replaced when i did the engine. i'll check the location of the mounts and make sure they're in the correct spots. i should add that i had a lot of trouble getting the engine and trans to line up. Last edited by Nate; 07-16-2009 at 05:45 PM. |

Initially it sounded like it could be driveshaft related. Since you say it has been Balanced, that should be ruled out.
4th Gear is Direct Drive in the Transmission. Being that 4th Gear is the Input shaft, once getting into that gear it is not uncommon to experience vibration. This is caused either due to a worn inout shaft bearing or the input shaft is not shimmed properly. The input shaft is attatched to the main shaft and if not shimmedproperly it can wreak havoc. Once you shift into 5th it can and will go away because 5th gear is on the tailshaft side of the transmission. Also in your PM you mentioned Alignement of the clutch and some issues. It is very possible that you damaged the hub of the clutch which can/will also cause a vibration. Most likely the Balancer is OK but carefully inspect the Rubber Insert. Very common issue. Let me know if I can help you out any further.

Can you tell Nate in the 5.0 section that his vibration problem is a bad pilot bearing.
Thanks in Advance, -Matt
