shift knob retaining nut

this might sound like a stupid question, but is my car supposed to have one? i installed a FRPP cobra style shift knob, and i ruined it by twisting it on too much (caused a bump in the knob where the handle started pushing through). so i got another one. but it doesn't want to stop screwing in. is there supposed to be a metal retaining nut to stop the shift knob from screwing in, so it's secure? right now i can move it in any direction and it will spin with very little effort. not a good thing when you're power shifting.

Not for the stock knob. My MGW shifter handle has a small set screw on the collar of the knob to lock it into place.

So how can I secure this shift knob so it stops twisting? There's no bolt or retaining nut that it came with. Thread tape maybe? Or glue?

Spend a little chedda and get yourself a nice knob Once I installed the Tri-Ax in my GT, I could never get the stock knob to line up correctly again.
