"Chopped" on Food Network

Anyone watch this? My wife and kids love it. We were watching last night and my older daughter asked me what four ingredients I'd put in a basket so I threw out four random things we usually have in the house. My wife got irrationally excited and is now cooking me a dinner with saltines, chicken, apples, and string cheese. I should have come up with a better list of items!

Aw that's adorable. Hope dinner's tasty! That should be an easy combo at least.

I like the show well enough myself.

My girl friend is all about that show, I've been forced to watch it a few times, admittedly it's pretty entertaining...

IDK about making baskets at home though, that would not go well here.

Yeah I didn't want to get too crazy.

I just went down to see what was going on. Dinner's in the oven and it looks like chicken stuffed with some cheesy mixture and then wrapped with bacon. There's no part of that sentence I don't like.

Dude, I love that show, and that sounds like a great time

I've got a few friends that we kind of do the same thing with about once a month. Last time one of my buddies came up with an EPIC buffalo chicken dip that he stuffed in Artichokes. It was fvcking incredible.

I hope you're timing her? Also I hope if the meal sucks you have the sense to ridicule her, tell her she's a loser, and ask her to leave

Yep. I watch it quite a bit. It's good to get a grasp on flavor combinations.

I will do that. I just ran down again and she has set up a frying station. Something's going to get run through flour or white corn meal, eggs, and saltines and fried up. The plot thickens.

Probably my favorite show on TV. Like SUMrTOY said, it's great for learning about different flavor combinations along with different techniques. I'm much more into technique-oriented cooking than following recipes.

Okay, here's the plate:

And don't laugh at our plates, they were very stylish in 1994 when we did our wedding registry.

She made boneless, skinless chicken breasts stuffed with sour cream, spinach, Monterrey jack cheese, and garlic, then wrapped in bacon and baked. The result was quite tasty. I've never had bacon done in the oven like that and it seemed to taste much smokier than normal and it really added something to the chicken.

She cooked the apples up in a pan with butter and Cinnamon. They came out great and weren't as sweet as in a dessert. She did a great job of retaining apple flavor and not making them really soft or sweet.

Finally, she made fried mozzarella breaded with saltines. These were quite good and society is clearly under-utilizing the saltine. She fried fairly often and usually uses panko bread crumbs, but I hope the saltines get worked into the rotation.

Pretty impressive for a girl who couldn't cook when we got married and has slowly taught herself over the years!

Nice! Glad it was a success!

(tho she totally could have used all four ingredients in one dish with an apple/moz stuffed chicken coated in saltines and skillet fried)

Gee, I wonder what you would do with that combo...

1. inhale chicken, bones and all
2. melt string cheese in 1lb of butter
3. smash up crackers and put in the cheese/butter to make pudding
4. guzzle the pudding
5. throw the apple away

Angry

I enjoy watching it, and have for a couple of years.

If you liked that bacon, sometimes I will throw some thick cut bacon in the oven sprinkled with brown sugar and fresh black pepper. Amazing.
