Diablo III people - SECURE YOUR ACCOUNTS

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/05/...blo-3-accounts

looks like hacking is just as big (or bigger) problem as it is in WoW.

GET AN AUTHENTICATOR. If you have a smart phone, the app is free.

i figured it was going to be bad now that there is a real money AH, although the one good thing is blizzard does go out of their way to help you get all your sh!t back if it does get stolen.

Do you play on that many different computers?

Whilst issues like this have been plaguing World of Warcraft and other MMOs for years, what's most troubling is that some people have said Blizzard's authenticators haven't protected them. The authenticators, which are available in physical form or as iPhone and Android apps, work by randomly generating a unique code tied to your account that expires within two minutes each time you try to log in. It means only people with your phone or authenticator can ever log into your account... in theory
looks like I'm not gonna bother lol

you only have to authenticate once on the machine, but you can set it to require authentication at every login if you desire.

unless something changed your WoW authenticator should work with Diablo...it all goes thru battle.net...but I have not gotten around to playing the live diablo yet.

werd

Although, in the early days, I found it wasn't that big of a deal to have to enter the code every log in. It's not like having an unlock code on your cell phone, those are more annoying. You unlock your cell phone several times a day, and you often only used your phone briefly before locking it again. With Battle.net, you typically only log in once, and play for hours.

None of my accounts have ever been compromised, but I felt it was worth the minimal amount of time and effort for the piece of mind. Now that the authenticator only prompts for a code when your log in habits vary, it's even less effort.

But of course, people will bitch about anything. They'll spend countless hours everyday playing video games, yet cannot be bothered to click a few extra buttons once a blue moon. It reminds me of the Oatmeal comic about buying apps: http://theoatmeal.com/blog/apps

yeah - people are claiming that hackers are spoofing their IPs to bypass the authenticator. I have a lot of trouble believing that that is true - and Blizzard says it isnt true.

Quote:
Despite the claims and theories being made, we have yet to find any situations in which a person's account was not compromised through traditional means of someone else logging into their account through the use of their password. While the authenticator isn't a 100% guarantee of account security, we have yet to investigate a compromise report in which an authenticator was attached beforehand."

Hardly. But I'm not such a fvckup that I can't have more than one thing in my life that I can use for entertainment.

I feel sorry for you. Even more so because you're just too cool for us - which means you're probably a cat killer or something.

Well don't feel bad, my little brother got hacked even though they had an authenticator. Luckily Blizzard just restored their account to some previous point.

They restored my account too, lost a couple of levels but better than nothing. They also said they will only restore an account twice and after that no guarantees. The D3 forums are saying the games are being spoofed and hackers don't need your pw/authenticate code. I stopped playing public games, hopefully it doesn't happen again.

I 've only played with random players 4 or 5 times, other than that its been you fvcksticks, so I know who to blame.

I am guessing that they are getting in somehow in part by playing in a public game?
