another home theater question [flamesuiton]

so i get my new house completely wired (correctly ) for my surround sound system, and right before we get ready to move, my system takes a dump on me  it was a home theater in a box system from 2004, but it sounded pretty decent so i just never replaced it. it doesn't seem JVC is much in the game anymore, so i'm not sure what to buy. i got my parents a Samsung HTIAB two years ago for christmas, but i'm not sold on how it sounds. can i just get a new receiver and use my existing speakers from the old system? they have special plugs on them for the old JVC unit, so i would need to splice banana plugs onto them and an RCA plug for the sub, but would that be better than just getting a whole new system? i don't really want to pay a ton of money piecing together a custom system with a receiver, sub, and speakers, but i don't want it to sound like garbage either. i was looking at this receiver on newegg, it has gotten some pretty good reviews. thoughts guys?

You should be able to re-use the old speakers. Check their resistance (in ohms) from the spec sheet and make sure they're compatible with a new system.

I have (had I guess) a home theater in a box, so the connectors for the speakers to the unit were unique to that system. In order to use those speakers on another receiver that uses banana plugs, I'll have to cut the old plugs off the speakers and splice in banana plugs to them. Part of my question was if I could even do that. I mean, I know I CAN, but would the unit blow the speakers? I need to get their specs tonight.

What are banana plugs? I would expect them to just be bare wire like normal speakers. In any event, changing the connectors won't hurt anything.

That receiver you linked looks find but unremarkable. At that price point, I would think and major brand would be fine so long as it has the features and connectors you need. I recommend taking a look at Pioneer if you haven't already, but there's nothing wrong with Yamaha.

Is there anything wrong with what I said.

EDIT: I googled banana plugs and I am familiar with that connector but never heard that term.

I would do exactly what your saying. Then you have the option of upgrading the main speakers down the road and then later the rears etc.

that's what i'm thinking. the system i have now doesn't sound terrible at all for a 2004 JVC dvd player/ss combo. deep bass, clear mids/highs. the dvd player stopped working after one of my moves, but i use my PS3 to upconvert everything so it didn't bother me at all.

I've heard of banana hammocks, never banana plugs though. Is that a fancy butt plug?

I recently picked up some killer Klipsch floor speakers and a Harmon Kardon Reciever...

Now I just need to close on a damn house
They're sitting in the boxes in my parents basement.
