This man knows, darker is better to me, lighter taste too much like a soup.

Only thing I will argue with you about is okra. A good okra gumbo is tasty.

Yes. The recipe you posted looks much better.

File powder is hard to find. The posted recipe was intended for someone to make with readily available ingredients. While it isn't exact, it is pretty close.

Do you even know what a roux is?

That's just your excuse for linking to a crappy recipe. After all, on MW we can never be wrong, right, f@ggot?

Listen, twerp. Having never tried gumbo, this recipe piqued my interest. I researched several recipes. The one I posted looked the easiest to make. Having lived with Calvin for a period of time, I know he isn't a big chef. I figured this recipe would be a good place for him to start. The foodwishes recipes are always solid. Before I posted this recipe I looked up file powder. The pages I read said it wasn't a vital ingredient. It is used to help thicken things up. A heavy roux or okra can accomplish the same thing.

And no file powder isn't sold locally to me. It isn't something I would bother ordering online either.

Gumbo is a food that always sounds better to me than it ends up being Even when I was in NOLA I ordered it a few times and was never blown away.

Exactly.
You didn't know what you were talking about, but then tried to defend it.

Let me get this straight... you've never had gumbo, and didn't know how to make until your google search today, but you have actively looked for gumbo file in stores?
Yeah, you're definitely not a self righteous idiot.

Yes, f@ggot. I looked for it last night while I was at the store. I never claimed to be an authority but you obviously are. Please post your recipe so we may be enlightened.

Speaking of self righteous, you have positioned yourself as the board know it all. This thread is a prime example with your telling me what products are available locally to me.

Enough of your bullsh1t until you post up your own recipe.

That's because New Orleans really isn't cajun/coon-ass. You'd have to go to the Lafayette/New Iberia/Breaux Bridge area (about 2 hours east of New Orleans down I-10) and hit up some of the festivals to get the real stuff.

Yes I did. I love cooking and wanted to see if I could get it locally. My plan was to make a batch of the recipe I posted then try one of the more complicated ones to see if it is worth the extra effort.

I'm still waiting for your recipe.

I thought the recipe that "piqued your interest' didn't require gumbo file, you fruit cake?

This f@ggot can't even keep up with the lies he's telling in this one topic

Edit;
I see your turbo edit. You added the part about making 2 batches to cover your tracks.
What a tangled web we weave.

I get defensive as hell when you say the recipe I have sucks without offering a better alternative. I've explained why I chose that recipe and I'm done arguing. I am planning on making a batch so I would love to see your awesome recipe to compare.

File is hard to find? Get real.

and do I know what a roux is?

You forget, I live about 30 minutes from New Orleans, imbecile. :hard:

Here, I did a little leg work for you so you can figure out how to actually make a real gumbo...

Go to Harmons at 1189 East 700 South, they have some file powder waiting on you.
