Thumbs up Finally picked up another Mustang

After about 10 months "Stangless" I finally have joined the ranks of Mustang Ownership once again.

I decided to go back to my SN95 roots. There has always been a part of me that missed my 96 GT. Part of me that wished I had kept it and done all the modifications I had always dreamed of. I just love the lines of the body style, the styling, and some of the mechanical simplicity in older Mustangs. Even after owning a 2008, it was my favorite body style.

I picked up a 1998 Cobra. Rio Red w/ Tan interior. 80k on the clock and clean as all hell. I got a hell of a deal on it because the paint was faded. My buddy owns a body shop and is in the process of re-spraying the entire car now.

Its got a few mods already:

- Steeda firewall clutch adjuster, quadrant, and cable.
- Steeda cold air kit.
- Pro 5.0 shifter.
- Eibach springs, shocks, and struts.
- Brembo Cross Drilled and Slotted Rotors w/ Ceramic Pads
- Fr500 rims 18x9 fronts with 18x10 rears. Running Nitto Invo tires.
- BBk O/R x-pipe with Mac cat back exhaust with chrome 3 inch tips.
- Dyno tuned- made 277rwhp and 286ft/tq

Plan on swapping out the exhaust ASAP. Yes it sounds like raspy doo doo with a catless x-pipe and chambered mufflers. Probably going to go with a pro-chamber with 2 chamber flow-masters.

Definitely going to not fear the gear and put 4.10's in it, it needs it so bad. Probably will switch to a C&L Cold Air with Plenum. Then lastly I plan to supercharge it with a Vortech. Still researching mods as this is my first 4v so trying to see what works well with them.

I don't drive much anymore as I work in NYC and take the train in every day. So its probably going to mostly be a weekend cruiser/show car.

Pics below from when I got it. I'll post better pics once its back from the body shop.

and for anyone interested. I still have the 67 as well, but it needs head gaskets and I am in the process of welding in new floor pans and restoring the interior.

Thanks!

I am not a fan of tan either, but a decent 96 - 98 Cobra with black leather is so hard to find....at least within a reasonable distance from my area.

I wanted black leather so bad, but every one I would find was either a convertible or the exterior was black. I didn't want a black car and I definitely didn't want a vert . The few Cobras that I did see that were coupes with black leather that weren't black or convertibles had torn seats and/or they wanted way too much $$ for the car.

I've been looking for months, I even briefly considered a 94 - 95 Cobra because those are more available with black leather in coupes.

For some reason in 96 - 98 most coupe Cobras had the "saddle" interior, don't know why.

I will admit its growing on me though. If I ever had the chance to swap it for black though I would in a heart beat...and it would be .

Laser > Rio

What'd you pick it up for... I hope it was like 5-6k'ish.

I miss my '97 - just for the sake of nostalgia though.

edit: ya, I hate the peanut butter interior.

Not true, but saddle is probably what is always for sale.

Agreed with the best looking Cobra part. Esp lowered, with wide tires. I want to do an S281 wing. Some of my buddies want to see it with the 94 - 95 Cobra R cowl style hood, but I am torn between that and the stock one.

Nostrils > Cowl

I'd almost look for a 94-95 wing instead of the S281. I like the S281, but I feel like it's a bit played out.

You can sometimes find OEM take-off leather skins on ebay. They are pretty easy to swap.

Def think I like the nostrils more.

I like the 94 - 95 wing, but I think it would look weird with the double 3rd brake light....unless I was able to get it shaved from the trunk or wing....

True, but then there are a lot of interior panels that need swapping or dying too. I would want to swap them though, the dye never comes out right from what I have seen. Or it scratches off too easily.

Maybe one day....

That's actually AWESOME! Very original looking.

I've got a bit more tan, wondering how the 2 tone would look. But its good to see I have options besides a full interior swap.

Better throw a blower on there if you want to keep up with base model Mustangs and Camaros in these modern times.

they had all kinds of options from what i recall in terms of color. i think you could do a solid color as well. i just wanted to continue the two tone style. the leather has held up well had it in about 4 years now.

I miss my Black 97 Cobra. Have fun, man. Go for an H-pipe and Magnapacks. Subtle when you want it to be and huge when you get on it.

Nice find!

FWIW, don't change out 1 CAI kit for another. No gain=wasted $.. especially if a blower is on the horizon.

4:10's and a tune will make it snappy

Nice. I've been thinking about picking up a 94/95 to make a full suspension big brake wide wheel'd forged stroked and nasty 95 cobra clone.
I found a black/black 95 but the guy wanted way too much.

I hate red like Mr tohave. Red seems to be the cheapest color though. I'd be happy with black or white, but I might have to do a color change. If I did that I'd probably make a blue wingless 95 cobra clone.

Nothing sounds like a healthy push rod small block ford and nothing looks as good as a 95 cobra R for the money.
I'd love to build a 69, well thousands of other cars at that, but It'll be a long time before I have the time and money for that.

A guy in town is selling his 97 Cobra, green/tan coupe, 139K miles, for $7k. It's in real nice shape, but I'm telling the boss to go for $5k to $5500 if he wants it.

agreed... well, minus the road trip part. even on road trips mine was still pulling 23ish mpg if I remember correctly. But you had flowbastards and probably had crazy drone lol.

4.30's for sure on that car. Best mod I probaly did on mine.

Yep, was going to say the same thing about 4.30's. Hell, if you're only going to drive it around town, throw 4.56's in it. That motor LOVES gear.

doesnt take all that much when you consider what you can get a clean one for especially if you start with a GT and do a good HCI and maybe blower if you really want to wake it up. id bet you could fairly easily pull 450 hp out of that with a good HCI combo/blower and tune. at least that's what im hoping

not really sure how expensive it is to mod the 4.6 DOHC though.
