Dyno performance:
Baseline run done back in early 2001: 211rwhp/256rwtq. Considering the drivetrain loss, these numbers were a bit low for stock, but it was a very warm & rainy day here in Florida, not the best day for a dyno run!
After the Vortech SQ: 345rwhp/338rwtq! It’s interesting too that according to my Autometer boost guage, I’m running 10-11 pounds of boost off the stock pulley. It’s rated at only 8lbs. Not sure why I’m getting more, could be the exhaust upgrade, but this is reflected in getting a higher than normal 134HP upgrade! Vortech claims a 104HP average gain. I’m not complaining.
Initial thoughts after the Vortech installation: Having never driven a Vortech SQ supercharged car, I was impressed with just how quiet it really is. There’s a high pitched whine at idle that’s distinguishable, but it gets quickly drowned out by the exhaust when you hit the throttle. Also, the boost is dependant on the RPM, and you don’t really feel it until you get going - it feels stock just puttering around town or cruising, but kicks in and keeps pulling hard all the way to redline. My gas mileage went from an average of 22 to about 20, but was only 16 the first week I had it! And get used to Premium prices…
